Today was the first day back on the MA after a short break, and it's dissertation semester!
This morning I finally had an appointment at the hospital to speak to the dietician about my type one diabetes, which was a great start to the day. I took in lots of information and rushed back home to jump online for my first lesson of semester three.
The main assignment this term is the dissertation. I've had so many ideas already. One thing I know for certain is that I want to do a piece of gothic fiction, whether that's a set of poetry, a couple of short stories or a section of a novel. Whichever I choose, it'll have an unusual twist.
This MA has really helped me find my genre. I just love spooky stuff. Anything that's dark, elegant, unique, bizarre. I grew up watching and reading it and now I want to create my own quirky stories. I love a strong concept and interesting characters.
Something I plan to do in the next few months is submit some of my work to magazines. I'll keep you updated on this.
Our second lesson of the day was an insightful introduction. We got to learn more about the industry; agents, publishers, writing letters, conventions, etc. And to end the lesson we had to create a 100 word drabble, including the title in the word count, based on the photo below. Here's what I came up with...
‘The drawing is the skeleton, gentlemen, and the colour is the flesh.' A dark hum buzzed throughout the tavern.
‘Antonio, my friend? Trade me one of your flesh for a skeleton of mine own.' Lucifer shook his empty purse, his bottom lip protruding.
Antonio laughed into his ale. 'My models are far more beautiful than those in your possession.' And he gestured to his chest. The men banged their tankards, cheered, snorted like livestock. ‘And they are much more pleasing for company.’
Antonio gestured to the red mark upon Lucifer’s cheek; a bruise from a lady of the night.
Thanks for reading,
